Guidehouse Insights Leaderboard: Microgrid Controls Vendors

Assessment of Strategy and Execution for 16 Providers

Microgrid controls platforms are the gateway technology for microgrids to be mainstreamed. As controls unlock value and are arguably the most important technology decision to make any project successful, there is intense competition in this space. The defining feature of a microgrid is its ability to island in the event of a grid outage, whether planned (e.g., a demand response call) or unplanned (e.g., hurricane, wildfire, or earthquake).

Yet as distributed energy resources overtake the new capacity being added under traditional centralized generation worldwide, microgrid vendors are in many cases expanding their scope and looking to adjacent and overlapping digital platform opportunities such as virtual power plants and distributed energy resources management systems. Customized metrics developed for this report reflect the value that this approach to market captures (technical applications and functionality). These metrics also reflect key partnerships/acquisitions, business model innovation, and the size of both number and installed capacity of project portfolios, with better scores awarded to those vendors with projects that are optimizing diverse renewable energy resources, energy storage, and EVs as grid assets.

This Guidehouse Insights report ranks control providers on two criteria: Strategy and Execution. Threshold scores determine which category (Leader, Contender, Challenger, Follower) they fall into. The companies with the top three aggregate scores, also qualifying as market leaders, each have different strengths and weaknesses. Other notable companies and many of the traditional heavyweights in grid automation are included.
