Guidehouse Insights Leaderboard: ADMS Vendors

Assessment of Strategy and Execution for 9 ADMS Providers

Initially deployed to analyze power flows, optimize grid management, and support automation, distribution management systems (DMSs) have been around for more than a decade. However, utilities that deployed DMSs noted several redundancies associated with supporting different systems that relied on a model of the distribution network but maintained separate and therefore incomplete models. Because of this, tiresome updates and cross-verification of data were required, effectively slowing the processes of both. This led to the evolution of the modular, advanced DMS (ADMS).

The competitive landscape for ADMSs is unique given the extensive requirements and growing list of modules captured under the ADMS umbrella. This has led to a smaller, more refined pool of vendors. The pool is made up of traditional, large OEMs. It also includes smaller, more nimble vendors making inroads around managed services and cooperative and public utility targeting. Ultimately, the selection of ADMS vendor depends on a utility’s business objectives and constraints.

This Leaderboard from Guidehouse Insights ranks ADMS vendors on strategy and execution. Threshold scores determine each vendor’s categorization (Leader, Contender, Challenger, and Follower). This report evaluates 9 ADMS companies. These providers are rated on the following criteria: vision; go-to-market strategy; partners; technology; geographic reach; sales, marketing, and distribution; product performance; product portfolio and integration; pricing; and staying power. Using Guidehouse Insights’ proprietary Leaderboard methodology, vendors are profiled, rated, and ranked with the goal of providing an objective assessment of their relative strengths and weaknesses in the global ADMS market.
