2Q 2021

Global Wind Energy Database 2Q21

The global wind industry is estimated to install 88.5 GW in 2021, increasing from the previous estimate of 62.6 GW made at the end of 2020. The significant increase in estimated global wind additions for 2021 is driven by large annual capacity additions for China in 2020 that Guidehouse Insights expects to continue into 2021. Despite the impacts of COVID-19, 2020 was a huge year for global wind installations. The European Union recovery plan for renewables and the extension of tax credits in the US both helped the global wind industry remain resilient despite the pandemic. The largest increase in 2020 installed capacity came from China, which saw 46.8 GW of added wind capacity in 2020.

The US market is expected to peak in 2021 at more than 15.5 GW of annual capacity—an increase over the previous estimate of 14.1 GW from 4Q 2020. Both the US and China are experiencing rapid near-term increases in installations as generous policies are set to phase out or change.

This Guidehouse Insights report is an evolution on previous Guidehouse Insights coverage of the wind market. Its foundation is based on a new Excel model that is updated throughout the year. It focuses on tracking and compiling key market data for global regions and 36 countries, including historical annual and cumulative installed megawatts and 10-year forecasts. Segmentation includes onshore and offshore and distributed wind plus wind plant CAPEX forecasts.
