Distributed Renewables, Distributed Energy Storage, DERMS, EV Charging Loads, Demand Response, and Energy Efficiency: Global Market Forecasts
The deployment of distributed energy resources (DER) exhibited strong growth in 2022 and this trend will extend into 2023 and beyond. Declining technology costs, new business models, and legislative action emphasizing decarbonatization and resilience, most notably the Inflation Reduction Act in the U.S., are likely to drive adoption of distributed resources over the forecast period.
This report covers 14 DER technologies grouped across four distinct parts of the value chain that generate, manage, and consume electricity. EV charging is expected to overtake distributed solar PV in annual capacity installations of distributed resources. Energy efficiency and distributed energy storage systems are also forecast to exhibit strong growth through 2032.
Despite their distinct characteristics, all of the technologies covered in this report typically operate behind-the-meter at customer facilities. In some cases, the technologies are owned and operated by actors outside traditional utilities, such as the technology owner or third-party service providers and aggregators.
