Global Building Stock Database 4Q22

Commercial, residential, and industrial buildings are responsible for nearly half of all global energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Humans also spend almost 90% of their time indoors, making indoor environments a critical component of health and well-being, productivity, and safety. Quantifying the size of the global building stock can be a fundamental tool for understanding and combating pressing global issues such as energy consumption, GHG emissions, wealth and poverty rates, climate change, and the impact of urbanization on existing local infrastructure.

This version of the Global Building Stock Database represents the twelfth edition of the report. Many employers are favoring a hybrid work system and encouraging employees to return to the office, creating keen interest in agile, flexible workplaces to hedge against an unexpected crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, global demand for flexible commercial office space is increasing, but levels of occupied commercial office space are still below pre-pandemic volumes.

In this report, Guidehouse Insights provides data on the size and growth of the global building stock from 2018 to 2030. The report covers eight commercial building types (office, retail, education, healthcare, hotels & restaurants, institutional/assembly, warehouse, and transport) and two residential building types (single-family detached and multi-unit residential) for seven geographic regions and 232 countries worldwide. This study is intended to provide a comprehensive picture of the total commercial and residential building stock around the world. Guidehouse Insights continually refines its modeling methodology and data sources between updates.
