The smart metering industry continues to proliferate across both developing and developed regions. In North America and Europe, a growing number of utilities are advancing second-generation upgrade and replacement projects; these deployments are underpinned by significant technological advances in smart meter hardware, software, and communications. In emerging regions, such as Asia Pacific, Latin America, and the Middle East & Africa, multiple nationwide rollouts and late adopters are helping accelerate high volume investment.

Since the release of the most recent Guidehouse Insights Global AMI Tracker in 4Q 2023, North America has had the greatest number of new deployments. Ongoing utility projects are fueling a positive market outlook with Itron and Landis+Gyr remaining the most popular second-generation vendors by selection share. Western Europe added several new projects and continues to advance multiple nationwide rollouts. Eastern European markets have traditionally struggled because of financial constraints, though they are showing signs of blossoming. Asia Pacific remains highly fragmented, with high volume activity and aggressive targets across several markets in the region. Latin America has traditionally been an underdeveloped market, led mostly by Brazil and Mexico, but Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Peru have begun exploring advanced metering on a national scale. Middle East & Africa has also been slow to adopt advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) but Kuwait, Iran, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates have announced or deployed large scale projects. Africa is still significantly inhibited by financial constraints, but disparate small to mid-scale projects are propagating across the continent.
