Energy IT Forecast Database 2Q23

Utilities face two major changes—one is the shift toward digitalcapabilities, and the other is the spread of distributed energy resources (DER). Over the past few decades, smart metering, enabled by digitalcapabilities, has led to the expansion oflow costsensing andmeasurement devices throughout the transmission and distribution space. However, utilities arenot able to amalgamate and process the data they obtain from thesesensing and measurement devices without effective energy IT and operational technology (OT) systems.

With DER and renewable energy, additional advanced energy IT and OT systems—especially advanced distribution management systems and DER management systems—are needed to enable more dynamic, flexible, and decentralized grids. Incorporating DER and renewable energy sources with well-equipped, reliable management systems will increase the grid’s overall stability.

This third edition of the Guidehouse Insights Energy IT Forecast Database draws upon the global grid infrastructure and DER databases to report on technology application and optimization systems across grid and non-grid-edge solutions. The grid technologies covered include meters, smart meters, networked and non-networked substations, and feeder line miles at the regional, country, and utility levels. The grid-edge technologies include forecasts developed by combining ground-up data on adoption for base year assumptions with known plans for upcoming adoption and patterns in DER adoption forecasts that inform future growth assumptions.
