Energy Blockchain Vendor and Deployment Tracker 3Q20
Vendors, Project Deployments, Use Cases, Investments, and Key Trends from the Emerging Energy Blockchain Market
Blockchain is a mathematical framework for decentralized information and systems management. Since roughly 2015, startups, utilities, and technology companies have financed and deployed demonstration and pilot projects to determine whether blockchain can address pain points across the energy industry. These projects focused on a wide range of use cases, from Transactive Energy (TE) and peer-to-peer energy trading to supply chain management and renewable energy certificates. As the technology slowly matures, the narrative that blockchain will fundamentally disrupt the energy system is giving way to a more pragmatic vision in which blockchain makes existing processes more efficient.
TE and peer-to-peer energy trading in distribution-level local energy markets has followed a similar cycle. Originally considered to be the most disruptive application of blockchain in the power sector, local energy markets (LEMs) have proven slow to implement in practice. But energy blockchain vendors and research groups have made a targeted effort to involve utilities in their projects to demonstrate that distribution-level trading can be integrated with existing grid systems.
This Guidehouse Insights report tracks global energy blockchain project deployments, use cases, and vendor activities around the world. It covers 262 vendors 333 projects across five global regions. This report provides a broad and representative view of the energy blockchain market.
