With an accompanying HTML-based dashboard including interactive maps and charts that can be dynamically filtered, the Tracker provides an invaluable resource for following developments in this burgeoning market. This version is expanding coverage to include major capture technology providers and uncovering more utilization projects across the world that largely go unnoticed. In its net-zero scenario, the International Energy Agency has suggested that up to 8 gigatonnes of carbon must be captured and stored annually by 2050—signaling that work must be done.

Carbon capture is not a new technology but rallied by climate change imperatives; bolstered by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s scientific validation of carbon capture solutions; and supported by technological developments and a series of government incentives, business models, and industrial cluster agreements, CCUS is growing.

Based on publicly available project announcements, more than 1000 Mtpa’s worth of project capacity is currently under development. These include cross-border COtransport, offshore COsequestration, the marine transport of liquified CO2, and the development of direct air capture technologies linked to carbon credit markets.
