Drone delivery of packages, whether they contain coffee or lifesaving medications, has become a disruptive technology for remote and last-mile delivery. Unmanned cargo aircraft (UCA) have existed in small numbers since the mid-2010s, mostly as curiosities or as lifesaving technologies in Africa, Australia, and Asia Pacific. Since 2017, with the very first drone delivery, UCA have captured the interest of hundreds of companies globally, which are all rushing to bring the newest technologies to market.

UCA of nearly every size are being developed, from small multicopters with a useful payload of 1 lb to large all-weather aircraft capable of vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) and carrying a payload of 5,400 lbs. A diverse collection of manufacturers has created significant variation in airframe and software innovations, and all are eager to take the next big step into the market. Factors driving the development of UCA range from reductions in delivery time, use of ground-based delivery vehicles, and operating costs. Studies have shown that last-mile delivery costs can be reduced from approximately $10 to less than $1 by using UCA, spurring companies to invest heavily in UCA technology. With more than 200 companies building UCA, preparing for mass production, and working on government certification, the UCA market is primed for exponential growth by 2030. However, challenges to the market are numerous. Issues of range, limited payload capability, and government regulations are all factors affecting the feasibility of drone deliveries.
