The North American Smart Meter Market Has Plateaued

Aclara, Itron, and Landis+Gyr are the leading North American smart meter manufacturers

Jun 27, 2016

A new report from Navigant Research tracks utility smart meter projects, providing data on global smart grid and advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) deployments, with additional analysis of related technologies, timeframes, and vendor selections, including a vendor selection share analysis for North America.

From 2009 to 2012, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Smart Grid Investment Grant Program contributed to an influx of smart meter installations across the United States. Since then, fewer project announcements have occurred, with a few scheduled deployments such as those by Consolidated Edison (Con Edison) and Hawaiian Electric helping to sustain the presence of AMI activity. Click to tweet: According to a new report from @NavigantRSRCH, the North American smart meter market has plateaued.

“While there has been a decline in the rate of project deployments across North America, one notable exception comes from Con Edison and Orange & Rockland Utilities,” says Michael Kelly, research associate with Navigant Research. “Aclara gained significant market share after being selected for this project, which includes the deployment of 3.9 million smart meters across New York State.”

Based on the projects tracked in the report, Aclara was the top manufacturer in terms of the cumulative share of planned smart meters in the North American market at 28.6 percent at the end of April 2016. Itron and Landis+Gyr followed at 24.2 percent and 23.7 percent, respectively, with Sensus and Honeywell rounding out the top four vendors with a combined 14.0 percent share of planned smart meters.

The report, Global AMI Tracker 2Q16, provides an analysis of global utility smart meter projects. It tracks data related to global customer endpoints, meter manufacturers, AMI communications vendors, systems integrators, and meter data management (MDM) vendors. The report also includes an examination of the technologies, timeframes, and vendor selections for AMI deployments across the world, along with vendor selection share analysis for North America. An Executive Summary of the report is available for free download on the Navigant Research website.
